US-Iran Talks Expected This Weekend in Pakistan

(MENAFN) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi revealed Wednesday that Washington and Tehran are poised to meet this weekend in Islamabad, Pakistan, with negotiations expected to extend well beyond the nuclear file into far more complex geopolitical terrain.

Speaking to Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Grossi confirmed the upcoming discussions would encompass ballistic missiles, Iran-backed militant groups, and formal security assurances for the Islamic Republic — signaling a broader diplomatic push amid an escalating regional conflict.

"This time, there will also be missiles, militias allied with the Islamic Republic, security guarantees for Iran on the table," he said.

The IAEA chief indicated that a provisional agreement could be within reach, though he firmly ruled out any military dimension to a potential resolution, insisting that diplomacy must lead the way.

"There are alternative diplomatic plans that would allow both a solution that says that at the moment there will be no more enrichment because the political, military, and trust situation does not allow it; and, in principle, to reassess the issue in five or ten years' time," he added.

The talks come against a backdrop of relentless hostilities. The United States and Israel have sustained an ongoing airstrike campaign against Iran since February 28, a bombardment that has claimed more than 1,340 lives — among them former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes against Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting American military installations, inflicting casualties, battering critical infrastructure, and sending shockwaves through global aviation and financial markets.
