Iran Confirms Participation in Islamabad Talks with U.S.
The confirmation emerged during a 45-minute phone call between President Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, during which the Iranian leader expressed gratitude toward Islamabad's leadership for its instrumental role in brokering a temporary ceasefire between Tehran and Washington, according to an official statement released by Pakistan's Prime Minister's office.
"He confirmed that Iran would be participating in the negotiations in Islamabad," the statement read.
Sharif welcomed Iran's decision to honor the ceasefire and accept Pakistan's offer to host the landmark discussions later this week. He additionally extended his personal respects to Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei during the exchange.
While the precise format of the negotiations remains undisclosed, government sources in Islamabad told media that senior Pakistani diplomat Ishaq Dar will lead Islamabad's delegation at the table.
Sharif had previously announced the two-week ceasefire agreement and extended formal invitations to both Washington and Tehran on Friday "to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes."
US President Donald Trump publicly announced the ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, describing Tehran's submitted proposal as "workable" — a 10-point framework for structured negotiations. Notably, the announcement came fewer than two hours before the expiration of a deadline Trump had repeatedly prolonged, during which Iran had been warned to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face what he ominously described as "the destruction of an entire civilization."
Iran's Supreme National Security Council subsequently revealed that the 10-point proposal — conveyed to Washington through Pakistani mediation — encompasses several pivotal demands: a binding US non-aggression commitment, uninterrupted Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, formal recognition of uranium enrichment rights, and the comprehensive removal of all primary and secondary sanctions.
The sweeping proposal further calls for financial compensation to Iran, a full withdrawal of US combat personnel from the region, and a cessation of hostilities across all active fronts — including the ongoing conflict against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
